I am a sushi whore

Spending a day in a fish market tends to put one thing on your mind: Love. Well, that wasn’t quite obvious, but in a distant second is fish. And what better way to celebrate the joys of fish than by eating it raw with some spiced ginger?

After scouring the review sites, I happened upon Mashiko Restaurant - a generation X-er type place that is known for having ‘the best sushi in Seattle’. The website and menu clearly posts the rules of the establishment, which include:

  • Music is chef’s choice.
  • Don’t be afraid to try something new.
  • Shut-up and eat!

Not knowing what was fresh, I decided to leave my fate in the hands of the chef and ordered a “chef choice roll” with 8 pieces of Nigiri on the “expert” level. This feast included Uni (sea urchin), Ama-ebi (shrimp) , eel, Ikura (salmon roe), and many others. This is the first time that I have actually enjoyed Uni because it was actually fresh and firm. The whole dinner was wonderful and was topped with a glass of Ume Shu plum wine, with a dried plum nestled at the bottom of the glass.
The sushi was honestly the best I have ever had. Every piece was as fresh as possible. I put little or no soy sauce on the pieces because the flavors were already incredible. My waiter was also very nice and gave me a free “sushiwhore.com” bumper sticker before leaving!
